Why must you format a storage device?

Formatting a storage device does several things:



- builds a structure and directory to hold and synchronize files

- initializes the device for future repairs, (reorganization, integrity test, repair and identify bad sectors)

- test the device for bad spot, and grades those spots as unusable



Without formatting, you would be stuck with nil.



Take a blank unformatted CD-R for instance. It is best used when you BURN ONCE and FINALIZE the disk. But a large element of the burning process is to establish the tracks and build the directory structure, which is what formatting does. A so-called Formatted CD-RW has the tracks burned contained by, so future notes can be added to the organization of the medium.



A hard drive, floppy disk and thumb drive medium does use a self correcting format structure; with various special utilities that will help to ensure that the notes is kept in apposite shape. This includes CHECK DISK, Disk Cleanup and Defrag. Other utilities include fdisk for managing partitions and format for formatting the drive, or reformatting it again.
